After weeks of maneuvers and minor skirmishing, the Northern Virginia Campaign is about to reach its climax on the familiar battleground of Manassas, where thirteen months earlier the Union Army had suffered a humiliating defeat in the first major battle of the Civil War. This time, however, Union Major General John Pope is determined to strike a crushing blow with his Federal Army of Virginia - reinforced by elements of McClellan's Army of the Potomac - to the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee. Can the Union Army redeem the loss from thirteen months earlier by winning a crushing victory at Bull Run, or will the Confederacy repeat another decisive victory on the plains of Manassas? The Second Battle of Bull Run (or Battle of Second Manassas) - twice as large and twice as deadly as the first battle fought here - will prove to be the decisive action of the campaign.
