The Battle of Shiloh begins as General Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of Mississippi launches its general attack on Major General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee encamped along Pittsburg Landing. The first day of the battle turns into a bloodbath for both sides, as the Confederates take Grant's forces by surprise and push them back from their encampments, ultimately towards Pittsburg Landing itself. But the Union does not withdraw without a fight. Staggering losses on both sides ensue in this back-and-forth battle in the woods of southwestern Tennessee. The fate of the Western Theater heavily relies on the outcome of this battle.
