Operation Detachment was to last 5 days and secure the island of IWO JIMA with its airfields. IWO JIMA veterans vividly describe their experiences during the battle that would last for 36 days. IWO JIMA follows the planning of the invasion, the pre-attack bombardment, the landings, fighting and the capture of IWO JIMA.
IWO JIMA brings together the events of the attack with authentic films and photos. Many of these films and photos are rarely seen by the public.
