Suspending creatures in moments of tension and recalling the myths and legends with which they are associated, Shelley Muzylowski Allen reminds us that nature is precious and fleeting. From the Red Gazelle to the White Rhino some of her subjects face extinction or have been forever lost in the tides of time. Using her background in painting and her understanding of anatomy, Muzylowski Allen creates contemplative vignettes with hot glass. Sumptuous coloring and textural surfaces of her forms inspire a powerful influence on human feeling. Muzylowski Allen's work then and now was directly influenced from her experiences and environment that surrounded her. She layers glass powder colors and uses a reverse carving technique to achieve detail, texture and a painterly style on her blown sculpture. About the Artist in Residence program at The Henry Ford: throughout the summer, renowned glass artists from across the globe take up temporary residence at The Henry Ford to showcase and share their artistry. Join us for this special opportunity to experience art in action, including how contemporary artists work, implement designs, collaborate and meld concepts into the physical.
