Months after the disastrous battle of Shiloh and the fall of the vital rail junction of Corinth, Mississippi, Major General Braxton Bragg is chosen by President Jefferson Davis to lead the revitalized Confederate forces in the western theater against the stagnating Federal troops under Major Generals Ulysses S Grant, and Don Carlos Buell. As the Federal forces were divided up and sent on various objectives after Major General Henry W. Halleck left for Washington D.C., with Buell marching east to take Chattanooga and Grant being docile around Corinth, Bragg sees a chance to retake the initial and regain all the lost ground lost in early 1862. However, at the same time, Major General Edmund Kirby Smith sees his own chance of obtaining glory by invading the vulnerable state of Kentucky as the federal press further south. With Bragg and Buell both heading his way, Smith realizes his own opportunity to get his goals into motion. Therefore, the Floridian kicks off his invasion of Kentucky, hoping for Bragg to join him in claiming the bluegrass state for the Confederacy. Only time will tell if Smith and the more reluctant Bragg can capitalize on their move north.
