Deems Taylor was almost a household name in those days, being prominently seen and heard in magazines and on radio, as a classical music popularizer and a successful composer. Through the Looking Glass is closely inspired by Lewis Carroll’s famous story, with extensive passages from the book directly quoted in the margins of the score.
